City Council Votes January 14, 2003 on Broadway Rezoning!

THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE!

SAVE THE BROADWAY GREEN-WAY!

SAVE THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS!

What you can do to save the last undeveloped thoroughfare into Downtown Asheville:

The Pressing Issue at Hand:

The city council has recently passed a new zoning classification called the Neighborhood Corridor. The department of Planning and Zoning has proposed that this new zoning classification be applied to Broadway Avenue from Interstate 240 nearly down to the intersection of W.T. Weaver.

Please take the time to send an e-mail to the city council, asking them not to rezone Broadway North of Chestnut Street.

Application of this new zoning designation is problematic in this area because it allows for commercial development that threatens both the Hillside/Woodrow neighborhoods on the East side of Broadway, as well as the Chestnut/Magnolia/Cumberland Circle neighborhoods on West side of Broadway, not to mention the long promised and eagerly awaited green-way from the river to downtown.

Although this new zoning designation is intended to promote "community oriented business" it has never been tested and has the potential to add fast food, Gas stations, and dry cleaners in the back yard of hundreds of residents.

As a compromise, a group of citizens who live in these neighborhoods are asking that the city council consider rezoning only the already business oriented land between Chestnut and Downtown, leaving the more residential neighborhoods zoned residential as they currently are.
