08/2005: Rezoning for Merrimon Burger King sought by developer

After having their bid for a variance rebuffed in May by the Board of Adjustment, developer Greg Edney and his agent, former Asheville Senior Planner Gerald Green, will petition the Planning and Zoning Commission for a rezoning in October.

Edney wants to put a bank and “office space” on the former Burger King property at the corner of Merrimon and Fenner.

That would be a good use of the property if they didn't want to put in two drive-thrus

This portion of Merrimon is not currently zoned for additional drive-thrus, which generate additional traffic congestion. Merrimon is at or near capacity.

Additional traffic on Merrimon would further degrade the corridor and have an adverse effect on surrounding residential neighborhoods.

Moreover, this rezoning would set a precedent for more rezoning. This is the third attempt at development with drive-thrus in five years.

WHAT CAN YOU DO:
Come to the Planning & Zoning Commission meeting at 5:00 PM on October 5th at the Woolcott City Building on South Charlotte St.
